3 Reasons Why Your Young Employees Experience “Tech Shame”

Even though we associate Gen Z and Millennials with being the most tech savvy generations out there it may surprise you that they are not as literate as you would think. Yes, they grew up using cell phones instead of landlines and know the ins and outs of TikTok and Xbox, but these skills don’t translate well to the professional workplace. In fact, a recent study says that 1 in 5 employees between 18-29 years old say they feel “tech shame”. Why? Because their older counterparts expect them to know how to fix the tech issues, but they can’t!

It’s unfair to expect younger employees to be able to fix technical problems in the office, especially since they don’t have the most experience in this environment. So what can business owners do to help all employees feel more equipped to handle technology?

Pandemic Employees

First, consider that many of your younger employees may have started their careers during the pandemic. Their only professional career experience has been remote or hybrid, so they know nothing about what an in person office feels like. Consider more face to face time with your employees if you can, whether that be in person annual meetings or more video time on your calls.

Training and Education

Second, training your employees on how to use this technology can boost confidence. Not just for younger employees, but all generations need education now that the workplace has shifted so dramatically. Even if your business in not hybrid or remote, many of your clients may be. Educating your employees on how to use remote and cloud tools can improve productivity and confidence. Not to mention that if they know how the tools work, they have a higher chance of being able to troubleshoot their problems independently as well. This means less downtime for your company.

Updated Equipment and Hardware

Lastly, take inventory on what equipment your employees are using. See if it’s out of date, broken, or inadequate to do their job. Make sure you are providing your staff with the right tools to get the job done.

Showing your employees you care by educating them, spending face to face time with them, educating them, and providing them with the tools they need to be the best employee they can be will change your relationships! Trust will grow, company culture will flourish, and your staff will be happy to clock in to work.
